How to Answer the “Why This College?” Essay

The biggest mistake in a “Why us?” essay is not a lack of research. It is selling the school back to the school.

Admissions already knows its economics department is excellent. It knows about the research center.

A strong essay shows what you would do there, and to a degree,  how that follows from what you have already done.

The hard part happens before you write

A great “Why This College?” essay can take hours of research before you write a single sentence.

The problem isn’t finding information. It’s knowing what to look for.

You can spend an evening on a college website and still miss the detail that makes your essay because it is rarely on the homepage. It is a first year research program. An odd interdisciplinary certificate. A lab that takes undergraduates. A professor whose current work overlaps with something you started in high school.

Dakota help you research more deeply

Dakota is trained on real CDS (Common Data Set) admissions data and expert guidance, and it starts with you, not the school.

Instead of “What is special about Northwestern?” you ask: I want to study journalism, but I also build things with data. What at Northwestern connects those?

Dakota goes to the school’s own programs and primary sources and brings back what is worth exploring. You evaluate the sources and research it more deeply.

The difference between a fact and an essay

Dakota finds the Knight Lab, where students work at the edge of media and technology. Now you have a useful fact to build your essay around.

The school supplied the opportunity. You have to supply the reason it matters.
